Tomatoes part 1

April and May is the best time to plant tomatoes in Three Rivers. Tomato plants need full sun (6+ hours direct sunlight), well-drained soil and regular water. Plant transplants deep so that only the first two sets of leaves are above the soil, trimming off the lower leaves. Because they are deep rooted they should be deeply watered. Water often enough to keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Mulching is highly recommended to keep the roots cool in the heat of summer and to help control soil-borne diseases.

April Veggie planting

This week the night temperatures are predicted to be in the 50's. Mid-April & 50 degree nights makes this the best time to get those veggie transplants into the garden. Tomatoes are best planted now before it gets any hotter, preferably before mid-May. Cucumber, squash, eggplant, corn & melons also benefit from getting their start now. Beans, basil & peppers do well if planted now through early June.
What NOT to plant now? Save peas, broccoli & other cole crops, lettuce & other leafy greens, carrots & other root crops for July, August, September & throughout the winter.
